Lucky Explorer sets new €52,000 record at Premier Sale

24th November 2020, a day that will go down in the history books. It was the day of the premier sale that had no inspections, no showing, no washing, no blowdrying, no ringside audience and no exhibitor led cattle. For us it will go down as the day we will never forget, the day that a young bull called “Lucky” made his mark on the world selling for a new European Simmental record price and Irish all breeds record of €52,000.

Lucky was knocked down to the Popes herd of Jimmy & Vikki Wood, Preston, Lancashire where he will join last years Overall Simmental of the Year champion, Clonagh Jubilant Fabulous was purchased last year for €18,000.

Clonagh Lucky Explorer

Lucky has been special boy from birth the best we have ever bred at Clonagh, we’ve been saying it from the morning he was born.

Dam, Clonagh Dora the Explorer, twice Overall Simmental of the Year (2014 and 2016) and former Miss Europe (2016). Her first calf Clonagh Horny Tiger G was National Champion and Premier Sale Champion. Second calf, Clonagh High Heels Dora was Reserve National Junior Heifer Champion. Third calf, Clonagh King of the Jungle was sold to an Italian AI Centre.

Sire Manor Park Hansome Overall Male of the Year 2019. Hansome was purchased for a top price of 22,000gns at the Stirling Bull Sales in 2017. Calves are like himself, excellent bone structure, correctness and natural muscle. Proving to easy calving with ET calves born from heifers naturally. He has a tremendous back pedigree of champions with Slievenagh Extra Special and Blackford Worzel.

Coming to join “Lucky” at Popes is his half brother and lifelong companion,”Latin Lover” selling for €6,800. Also by Manor Park Hansome he is out of our Miss World, Clonagh Darling Eyes. Dam of both National Show and Sale champions with sons selling to €10,000 and daughters selling to €6,100. Daughter of Senhorita, the highest grossing female in the herd.

Two exceptional bulls with exceptional pedigrees now heading to join an exceptional herd – we looking forward to following their progress and wish the Wood family every success with the our “bash brothers”

Clonagh Latin Lover

Our next best bull to sell was another Manor Park Hansome son, “Clonagh Leinster Fabulous” selling for €5,900 to Andrew McKnight, Antrim. His dam, Clonagh Glamorous Fabulous is full sister to Clonagh Kung Fu Fab, National Yearling Bull Champion and Reserve Overall Junior Male Champion 2019 and genetic full sister to Overall Simmental of the Year 2019, Clonagh Jubilant Fabulous sold for €18,000.  Grandam, Clonagh Absolutely Fabulous, National Yearling Heifer Champion Beef Expo 2010, National Intermediate Heifer Champion 2011, Reserve Overall Female of the Year 2011, 2012 and 2013.

He follows two bulls previously purchased by Mr. Mc Knight, “Clonagh Kandy” and “Clonagh Knock Out Eyes”

Another repeat customers, Gerald Towers of the “Tidkin herd”, UK purchased his third Clonagh bull, “Clonagh Lexus P” for €4,900. Lexus is our first polled son to offer from Manor Park Hansome. His dam, Curheen Gloria P was purchased at Curaheen Dispersal. She is an ET daughter of Jaegergard Amister P, a former Overall Danish National Champion.

Our final bull to sell was “Clonagh Lightning Rod” a powerful, red Banwy T-Rex son out of a Hillcrest Jacqueline heifer, Clonagh Heavenly ET. Jacqueline was a daughter of Camus Solitare by Sacombe Wishful Thinking and a prolific breeding cow for the Hillcrest herd. Lightning Rod was sold to Alister McKintosh, Glenlivet, Scotland for €3,300.

We had a full clearance of bulls selling for an average of €5,225 excluding the record price for Lucky.

We had a solid heifer trade with a full clearance of all 6 heifers presents averaging €3,350 ranging from €4,800 to €2,500

With the run up to the sale and the uncertainty with Covid 19 restrictions it was so reassuring to know the team of men we had looking after our cattle, the minute we knew who would be involved we knew our cattle were in the very best hands. Our sincerest thanks to Richard O’Brirne, John Lynch, PJ Smith, James Kelly, Eamon O’Donovan, Owen Hester and Fergal Flanagan for their impeccable work on the day. Thanks to Maura and all of the staff at Roscommoon mart for ensuring both buyers and sellers were looked after on the day and of course our auctioneer Denis Barrett so overseeing the trade under less than ideal circumstances. We had a smaller than usual army of help on the day due to restrictions but nevertheless couldn’t have done without them.

We wish all of our customers the very best of luck with their purchases and looking forward and hope to see everyone in better times in 2021.
